Small Business Saturday 2016 in SouthCoast MA

Small Business Saturday 2016 in SouthCoast MA

Small businesses throughout SouthCoast Massachusetts are kicking off the holiday season on Small Business Saturday, November 26, 2016, with an abundance of discounts and promotions for local shoppers.

Small Business Saturday, a movement founded by American Express, encourages consumers to shop at small, local establishments. Created in 2010, the shopping holiday is officially recognized by the U.S. Senate and elected officials in all 50 states. According to their official website, 95 million people shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday last year. SouthCoast businesses are joining the nationwide movement by offering local shoppers generous discounts and a customized shopping experience.

Black Tie Cookies, a gourmet cookie bakery based in Acushnet, prides themselves on both delectable cookies and customer service; they treat customers like family.

“Since it is a small business, you will mostly find family here and you will also be treated like family. I think that’s a big reason why we have the greatest customers ever…they have Black Tie Cookies as wedding favors, then baby showers and birthdays. We become a tradition in their families and that is so special to us.” said shop owner, Nicole Tracz.

Gourmet cookies aren’t the only tasty treat on the Small Business Saturday menu. Chocolate and candy lovers can save with local favorite, Dorothy Cox’s Chocolates. The Cox family has been catering to the SouthCoast sweet tooth for 88 years. Their ButterCrunch is famous among locals.

“The recipe has not changed since 1928.” said Shirley Cox, manager at their factory store in Wareham.

For shoppers searching for high quality apparel, footwear, and gifts, Euro Ship Store in Fairhaven has much to offer.

“We carry many items from house wares to toys to shoes and clothing – Danskos , UGGS, Dale of Norway and Icelantic sweaters. We also have Kuhl clothing , Helly Hansen and BOG boots as well as jewelry and Scandinavian items.” said Julie Isaksen, daughter of store owner, Gail Isaksen.

Family is a common thread throughout small businesses here in the SouthCoast. Bob Mercer, Jr. is the second generation owner of Bob’s Sea & Ski, a full service dive & ski shop founded over 30 years ago. Like his father before him, Bob, Jr., is very much involved in daily business.

“Rest assured you will be greeted by Bob nearly every day! If you happen to miss him, he’s probably out diving, fishing, or skiing!” said Mercer’s wife and store manager, Pam Melanson.

In addition to unique products, small businesses provide a more personalized shopping experience.

“I am a one woman show. When you come into my shop you get my attention and expert advice. Nothing gives me greater joy than finding that perfect project for a customer. The shop is full of samples of garments and accessories to spur their creativity!” said Eva Tillett, owner of Eva’s Yarn Shop in Fairhaven.

Small Business Saturday emphasizes the importance of community and it is no surprise that local businesses are very much committed to helping others.

“Over the last 25 years we collectively have raised over $300,000 and were recently inducted into the MA Special Olympics Hall of Fame!” exclaimed Melanson.

Care Free Homes, a local home improvement contractor located in Fairhaven, also understands the importance of supporting the community and other local businesses.

“We know how important it is to invest our time, talent, and treasure into the community. Our customers are our community and we really appreciate their business. We enjoy supporting and donating to our local non-profits, schools, and neighborhood initiatives. I think that’s the beauty of being a family owned company – we are able to carry our personal values over to our business.” said Care Free Homes Marketing Director, Stephanie Pickup.

“Small Business Saturday gives us the opportunity to network and support our fellow small businesses. We are so excited to join hands with so many wonderful people. I think it nurtures our community roots and helps cultivate a thriving, local economy.” said Pickup.

Shoppers can download the promotional flyer and follow the latest updates on our SouthCoast Small Business Saturday event page on Facebook.
