Pickup Family Looks to Raise $5k for United Way; Releases Disney & Points of Light Volunteer Family of the Year Video Submission

Although the Pickup Family of Fairhaven, Massachusetts had to end their quest for the Disney and Points of Light Volunteer Family of the Year, the Top 30 Semi-Finalists will continue their mission to promote and raise funds for United Way of Greater New Bedford.

Stephanie Pickup, Care Free’s Marketing Coordinator, reflected on her family’s recent accomplishment. “Being recognized as one of the Top 30 families in the nation was certainly exciting but our ultimate goal was to win at least $5,000 for United Way of Greater New Bedford. We really wanted to shine a light on their amazing work and inspire other families and businesses to get involved.” said Pickup.

This was the first year Disney and Points of Light launched a nationwide search to find the Volunteer Family of the Year; the contest celebrates families who give back to their community through selfless service. Thousands of families were nominated and the Pickups were excited to be among the Top 80 families in the nation. Stephanie and her four children, Taylor, Abby, Olivia, and Nathan, then had to submit a 2 minute, amateur video and were ultimately selected as one of the Top 30 semi-finalists. Despite an outpouring of support from local media and the SouthCoast community, the Pickups did not advance to the final round but are determined to rally support for United Way of Greater New Bedford and share their passion for volunteering.

The family supports and actively volunteers with several United Way of Greater New Bedford initiatives including the Hunger Heroes Project, Mobile Market, Food and School Supply drives, Power of the Purse, Holiday Wishes and more.
