FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 24, 2023 – East Providence, RI —–Mitzi Page, an East Providence mother devoted to decades of life-saving care for her son, was voted the winner of a free roof from Care Free Homes, a local roofing contractor. The Page family was among the finalists in the company’s annual New Year, New Roof Giveaway hosted earlier this month.
Communities from Rhode Island, Southeastern Massachusetts, and Cape Cod nominated deserving, in-need homeowners for the contest. Care Free Homes selected five finalists from the nominees to move onto the final, voting round. The community voted online to choose the winner. The Page family earned over 47% of the votes to win the contest and was notified with a sweepstakes style surprise at their East Providence home. The moment was captured on video and has been viewed by thousands of supporters and community members.
Dawn Harty, a nurse and family friend, nominated the family for the contest. Mitzi has dedicated the past 27 years to caring for their son, Kyle, who contracted bacterial meningitis at age 3.
“He went from an energetic little boy to a quadriplegic, relying on a ventilator to live, and in need of 24 hour family and nursing care. His family made a pledge that they would care for him in his home despite his many limitations and challenges.” said Harty.
“Kyle has been provided the most fulfilling life, experiencing high school proms, graduations, and countless family outings. Kyle’s Mom, Mitzi, has been nothing short of amazing, with never ending self sacrifice and love for her son.” she said in her nomination submission.
This is the 9th year Care Free Homes has co-sponsored the contest with GAF Roofing, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer. Thanks to Harty’s nomination and thousands of votes cast across the country, the Page family will soon enjoy the peace of mind and beauty of a brand-new GAF Timberline HDZ Roofing System.
Community partners who also supported the 9th Annual New Year, New Roof Giveaway included Black Tie Cookies, United Way of Greater Fall River, United Way of Greater New Bedford, and Isaksen Solar. Black Tie Cookies donated gourmet cookie arrangements to the winner and finalists. United Way helped promote the giveaway and connect qualified homeowners to the program. Isaksen Solar donated gift cards to all five finalists.
