A beloved friend to all who knew him, Tony was the lead carpentry foreman here at Care Free Homes for over 30 years. In February of 2022, our company was irrevocably changed with Tony’s heartbreaking and unexpected passing. We created the Anthony “Tony” Martin Memorial Scholarship to support our next generation of tradespeople and honor the life of a gifted craftsman, exceptional worker, and special member of our Care Free Homes family.
Scholarship Application Requirements:
- Must be a Graduating YouthBuild New Bedford student, Graduating Senior from Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School or Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School who is immediately pursuing a career in carpentry post-graduation.
- Copy of High School Transcript for GNBVT/OC students or Letter of Good Standing for YouthBuild New Bedford students that states they are actively participating/attending class and are on track for Spring/Summer 2024 graduation.
- Two Letters of Recommendation from Boss, Supervisor, Coach, and/or Teacher (one recommendation MUST be from a high school shop teacher or YouthBuild NB Carpentry Instructor)
- Make a 60-90 second video or write a personal essay of 450 words or less to introduce yourself, explain why you want to pursue a career in the carpentry trade, showcase any of your construction/carpentry projects and/or community work.

- All applicants are eligible to interview with Care Free Homes, Inc.
Scholarship Application Timeline:
- Applications accepted starting on February 9, 2024
- Application acceptance closes on April 29, 2024
Scholarship Award Details:
- This is a one time, $1,500 Award (divided)
- The scholarship funds will be divided: $500 gift certificate to Burns Power Tools to purchase tools and equipment, $500 to Carter’s Clothing to purchase work boots and work apparel, and an additional $500 will be awarded to a student enrolled in a training or trade certification program post graduation. Tuition check will be paid directly to the school. If the applicant is not seeking additional training or certifications, the scholarship award total will be $1,000.
- The recipient will be notified on or around May 15, 2024.

Tony had a great sense of humor but when it came to work – he gave 110% of himself everyday. He was a true professional driven by an outstanding work ethic, pride in craftsmanship, and an unrivaled dedication to quality and perfection. Although we miss him terribly, we have committed to keeping his memory alive through this scholarship.
